Professor Fabio Ciravegna

Prof. Fabio Ciravegna is Professor in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Sheffield. His research concerns data acquisition and analysis over large scale. He is the Director of the European Project SETA on Big Data for Sustainable Mobility in Large Metropolitan Areas (€5.5, 14 partners, 2016-2019). He was director for the European project WeSenseIt on Citizen Observatories of Water (€5.2, 15 partners, 2012-2016), and Director of the European Integrated Project IST X-Media on large-scale knowledge management across media (€9.9M, 14 partners, 2006-2010). He has published more than 130 papers. He has designed an algorithm for active mobility and physical activity using mobile phones that has been adopted by applications involving hundreds of thousands of users. Together with Public Health England he has designed and lead the implementation of Active 10, a mobile app fostering physical activity among the inactive population (over 620,000 downloads). He has lead the implementation and management of the SETA app, adopted by Birmingham City Council to track thousands of free bikes in the city and of Seta4Schools, an app designed to track motorised and active mobility adopted by the City Council of Santander, Spain, to track mobility towards and from 15 schools.Moreover he has co-created technologies for situation awareness in social media adopted by the emergency control rooms of events involving over a million people and acquired by Football Whispers, a service forecasting transfer of thousands of footballers from dozens of leagues worldwide.He has co-created two companies: K-now Ltd who commercialise large-scale data analysis technologies - and The Floow Ltd, a global player in the area of data car telematics which last year was one of the 10 fastest growing companies in the UK.
