Sleep made simple: using functional medicine to complement your own biochemistry

Thursday 13th June 09:50 - 10:20

Functional Medicine takes the approach of asking critical questions to understand the root cause of an illness. Over the next 30 minutes, Dr Dean St Mart will share some of the highlights of his research of making sleep simple through an understanding of every individual's own biochemistry.

Sleep plays a crucial role in overall health and well-being, but information around it is often over-complicated. At its core, Dr Dean will show how sleep is a simple biochemical process involving a balance between neurotransmitters in our brain and the sleep environment. Functional medicine recognises that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to sleep issues: by understanding an individual's unique biochemistry, Dr Dean's approach tailors’ recommendations and interventions to better suit the specific needs of each person.

Rather than focusing solely on the symptoms of sleep disturbances, Dr Dean will show how functional medicine explores the root causes. Factors such as nutritional imbalances, hormonal fluctuations, stress levels, and environmental influences are considered to provide a more holistic understanding of sleep issues. Functional medicine often incorporates nutritional strategies to support better sleep which may include addressing deficiencies or imbalances in specific vitamins and minerals that play a role in regulating sleep patterns. The incorporation of functional medicine principles highlights the importance of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.

The topic aims to empower you with the knowledge and tools to take an active role in improving your sleep by understanding the interplay between functional medicine and sleep. By addressing the underlying factors contributing to sleep disturbances, participants can take away informed decisions to positively impact their overall health and well-being.
