Dr William Bird MBE
Dr William Bird is a practicing GP with more than three decades experience in promoting physical activity and health. He set up the national schemes, Green Gym and Health Walks in the mid 1990s. He was the first medical director of the Met Office setting up the Health Forecasts in 2002 and then became Strategic Health advisor to Natural England from its inception. As CEO and Founder of Intelligent Health, he has developed Beat the Street, a programme that in just three years has engaged 950,000 people across Europe getting them more active and connected to their local communities.
He has been an advisor to WHO, and to many cities in developing physical activity strategies. He is co-editor of Oxford Textbook of Nature and Public Health with over 150 authors from around the world and author of the BMJ physical activity modules. In 2016 he was voted by BBC Wildlife magazine as one of the top 30 most influential conservationists in the UK and the Independent on Sunday voted him in the top 100 people to make the UK a happier place. In 2010, he was awarded an MBE for his services towards physical activity and health.
