How sport and activity could save the UK

Thursday 10th May - 13:20-13:45

As CEO of Sported, board member of Sport England and former Deputy Chair of International Inspiration – the groundbreaking London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic International Development Programme – Chris Grant is very familiar with the transformational power of sport.

But he also refuses to view things through rose-tinted glasses.

In this frank session, Grant looks below the shiny pinnacle of Britain’s recent Olympic and Paralympic achievements to explore the less impressive situation among the population as a whole: obesity, low participation rates, and what he calls a ‘social apartheid’ that prevents many groups in society from enjoying sports and activities.

But ever the optimist, Grant sees sport and activity as the single most important driver of progress for the nation over the coming two decades. He will use this session to galvanise the sport, fitness and physical activity sector into combined action, offering inspiration and examples that show how organisations across the sector can contribute to – and benefit from – a transformation in both the sector and the country as a whole.
