Lee Welch started playing wheelchair basketball aged 13, and joined the Great Britain Under23 squad at seventeen before making his debut in the senior squad at twenty two.. When Lee retired from wheelchair basketball he wanted to inspire other people to get fit and was keen to give something back to the community. Lee joined Aspire’s InstructAbility programme and became a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. As part of the programme, Lee undertook a work placement at Hartham Leisure Centre and was offered subsequent employment in 2014 where he continues to work as part of the fitness team.
Lee set up disability and limited mobility exercise classes to help show people what they can achieve. His work to engage disabled people in fitness activities has been recognised by an InstructAbility Award and in 2016 he won the Herts Disability Sports Coach of the Year. While Lee continues to work at Hartham Leisure Centre, he has also set up his own personal training business. ‘Beyond Limits Health & Fitness is a thriving business and stimulated by the Covid-19 lockdown he now works out of his own purpose built gym.
