Following a move to Children’s Services within the Local Authority in Blackpool, Justine worked as the PE and School Sport Adviser with an overview of all 40 schools across the Local Authority: including primary, secondary and special schools. In this role Justine developed strong links working with Leisure Services and starting to work towards preventative methods in tackling health inequalities through a broad range of relationships, initiatives and projects, over a 10 year period. In July 2013 Justine joined Sport England as the Relationship Manager for Local Government covering the North West of England. In this role she has worked with Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire to better position Sport and Physical Activity. Justine has worked closely in the development and realisation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership and Sport England and as such holds the relationship with Greater Manchester. In 2017 Justine became a Strategic Lead Local Delivery to form part of the Local Delivery Directorate Leadership Team and lead on the Local Delivery Pilot work. Leading in local government, charity, private and social enterprise sectors, I have developed my understanding of complex systems, from the community perspective and a strategic one. This is hugely valuable in my current role in GM, where we take a whole system approach to everything we do from homelessness to health, to transport. As the Exec lead for GM Moving, my work is located in the devolved and integrated system. Greater Manchester is Doing things Differently. It’s an exciting place to be. Together, leaders from across sectors wrote and launched the GM Moving Plan in 2017. As CEO of GreaterSport, I lead this amazing charity, enabling it to play its full part in the leadership and delivery of the system wide GM Moving Plan. We have big ambitions, and committed people. We seek to engage everyone from people and communities through to senior leaders who influence policy locally and nationally. (Hons), RNutr Dr. Gary Mendoza’s background is in personal training. Gary holds both British and American qualifications in personal training. He represented GB at the first ever IDEA personal trainer’s convention in Washington USA. Whilst working as a personal trainer (PT) he studied nutrition, graduating with a first in Applied Human Nutrition from the University of Wales. He moved into training trainers and developed a successful nutrition and weight management course; teaching PT’s the skills required to deliver a successful weight management programme. These skills include nutrition, activity and behavior change. This course formed the basis of his doctoral research. In 2006 he was awarded a PhD in nutrition, specialising in a multi-dimensional treatment for overweight and obese males. A big part of this research looked at the psychology of change. Gary has since undertaken further training in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and was fortunate to be trained by Professors Stephen Rollnick and William Miller, the founders of MI. Gary’s other area of expertise is sports nutrition. He was programme leader for sports nutrition and advanced sports nutrition at Massey University in New Zealand and trained with Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA). Gary lectures in nutrition for sport and exercise at Bath Spa and Cardiff Metropolitan Universities and is an Academic Associate member of the SENr. He is director of ‘Stages of Change Ltd and delivers the Behaviour Change Workshop; this workshop teaches personal trainers sound behavior change principals. Getting Physical Activity Support Right for People With Long-term Conditions: Sharing Findings from a National ConversationSpeakerDr. Catherine HomerResearcherSheffield Hallam University![]() Dr Catherine Homer is a Senior Research Fellow in the Sport & Physical Activity Research Centre (SPARC) at Sheffield Hallam University. She is an expert in public health and physical activity with 20+ years' experience, currently specialising in co-produced evaluation methods for diet and obesity. She has over 60 publications and conference proceedings on qualitative health evaluations of paediatric/adolescent obesity, experiences of bariatric surgery, and fuel poverty health risks (old and cold). Catherine has been PI/Co-I on research grants worth over £2.4m and is currently Co-I on a £1.5m NIHR project (2020-23), developing a co-produced mixed-method evaluation of the NHS England low calorie diet pilot. She was also Co-I on a £185k Sport England project (2020-21) working on the co-production of guidance to improve the experience of physical activity for people with long term conditions. She has co-led the development of the ‘Public Involvement in Research Group’ and is now Co-Lead of the Healthy and Active 100 theme for Sheffield Hallam’s £15m flagship ‘Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre’ (AWRC). She provides strategic support and delivery for Sport England’s Uniting the Movement ambitions for strengthening the connections between health, physical activity and sport so more people can feel the benefits of and advocate for an active life. Over the last four years she has provided leadership for work with health partners such as the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, NHS Horizons and the Royal College of GPs and the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine to integrate physical activity into NHS systems. She specialises in health, physical activity and sports development and brings a variety of expertise to her work with Sport England, having worked in a variety of roles at local, county, regional and national level in the public and charity sectors including roles with local authorities, the Department of Health, the British Horse Society and the Black Country Active Partnership. After gaining a degree in Sport and Recreation Studies from Staffordshire University, Ali worked in Local Authority Leisure facilities, moving into sports development at West Berkshire Council for 10 years where, after further study in health promotion she successfully set up one of the early GP Referral Exercise on Prescription Programmes. Joining the Youth Sport Trust is 2002, Ali worked as a Regional Development Officer with sports colleges and school sport partnerships before finding her vocation in Innovation where she has delivered and developed programmes in disability sport pathways, health and wellbeing, tackling obesity and physical literacy. In 2012/13 Ali researched and developed the award-winning Girls Active Programme which continues to tackle inactivity in adolescent girls, developing their confidence and leadership skills. In her innovation role Ali champions co-design with young people within and outside of YST and leads a small bid writing team contributing to the development of new and targeted programmes to support the charities work. Ali’s current action research project is Move and Groove, an intergenerational physical activity and music programme being delivered in partnership with Intergenerational Music Making. This is bringing children and older adults together through sport, physical activity and music, and making a sustainable difference to their physical and social wellbeing. She is delighted with the impact so far and determined to enable more children and older adults to enjoy the benefits of intergenerational activity.
