Men’s mental health: why we need to move more, talk more and connect more

Thursday 13th June 12:05 - 12:45

Collaborate

Why men’s mental health? 40 men across the world will die by suicide during this session. That’s one man, every minute. 3 out of 4 deaths by suicides in the UK are by men. Male mental health problems need to be talked about. The prevalence of mental health problems among adolescents is alarmingly high with young men and boys representing a group at high risk of developing mental health problems. If you are a man, or are partner to a man, have a son or a brother, a male friend, or client that is a man, this session is for you.

Research has shown that physical activity and sport is an effective and important avenue for supporting mental health. We know that moving more makes you feel better. But it also gives individuals the chance to be part of something, to connect with other people, and to inhabit a safe space for difficult conversations. This session brings together fitness professionals with a special interest in men’s mental health to discuss:

  • How physical activity can create community and safe spaces for difficult conversations, how to find the words – and what to say to men who need help, whether it’s in the gym or in life;
  • Why showing vulnerability is the foundation of good relationships and rapport, and the life-saving potential of fitness;
  • Scope of practice: when do fitness professionals need to bring in health professionals for back up? How to protect your own mental health and wellbeing when supporting others.
  • When fitness doesn’t help: self-judgement, fear of failure and fighting body stigma. How to navigate all of what fitness offers.

Attendees will gain new insights into the landscape of men’s mental health, the role fitness and exercise plays in managing and navigating good mental health, and, most importantly, remind us to look out for the men in our lives.
